SOG in Shooter

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to provide some knives for the production of the movie Shooter, starring Mark Wahlberg. The movies has been out for a while and I think it is on DVD now. They did end up using knives in the movie and they showed up on screen. Here is a picture of him with the SOG Daggert 2.

Kikuo Matsuda Knife Information

Monday, July 9th, 2007

Mr. Matsuda is one of the foremost hand grinders in the world and resides in Gifu, Japan. Always pushing the envelope, he has conjured up some of the most unusual grinds that incorporate hollow, flat, and convex shapes……all in one knife. Spencer and Kikuo collaborated to produce an interpretation of both of their design styles. Kikuo was asked to interpret SOGs design philosophy. SOG was challenged to utilize Kikuo’s skill in a novel way. We think the marriage of ideas has produced something truly unique.

SOG Kiku Knife

We have coined the name ‘reverse collaboration’. This is where a manufacturer works closely with a custom maker to create a collaboration of ideas. The custom maker actually makes the knife for the manufacturer. In our case the knife is limited to 50 pcs. By using the manufactuers brand and tapping into its distribution, the custom maker reaches a larger audience. This allows him greater sales and name recognition. For the manufacturer, the relationship also can expand the visibility of its core products by generating interest and publicity (and maybe winning a Blade magazine award). There is also an advantage in developing new technology or ideas in working with the custom maker. Lastly, if successful, the knife can evolve to the standard collaboration, where the manufacturer produces the combined design in volume and at a significantly lower price.

SEAL Team Elite

Monday, July 2nd, 2007

Last week we got the first batch of SEAL Team Elite knives shipped out.  We realize that this has been over shadowed by the iPhone launch and that is why it did not get all the media coverage we had expected.
SOG SEAL Team Elite

If you have been waiting patiently for this knife it should begin arriving in stores very soon.  Also, the SEAL Team Elite has received our new Croygenic Heat Treat process.  See below for more infromation.

Cryogenic Heat Treatment

SOG Cryogenic Heat Treat

SOG’s unique cryogenic heat treatment process increases the toughness and wear resistance of our blades. Taking the knife slowly down in temperature to less than -300°F and then back to room temperature. This stress relieves the material on an atomic level and increases overall strength as well as edge retention. Knife edges stay sharp longer with significantly less micro-fracturing and edge-chipping. Its this dedication to making your knife SOG sharp that sets us apart from the rest.

Look for the new Cryogenic Heat Treated logo on selected SOG Knives that have received this process.

SOG and Kiku Knives

Tuesday, June 12th, 2007

At the 2007 Blade Show SOG Knives presented a new concept in knife making the reverse collaboration. With this new concept we worked closely with custom knife maker Kikuo Matsuda of Kiku Knives. Spencer and Kikuo worked on the final design and Kikuo is going to produce the knife in limited quantities for SOG.

As a part of the Blade show there is a competition for several knife of the year awards.  These awards are voted on by fellow knife manufacturers a select jury.  This year SOG and Kikuo won the award for knife Collaboration of the Year.

SOG Team Leader

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

‘You can only lead from the front’ is one of our favorite expressions. If you are one of those people who covet the ultimate ultimate…then we have a surprise for you. The Team Leader reeks of the exceptional with incredible balance and streamlined aesthetics. What you might not sense when you first pick up this work of art is how exotic the steel is. This is one of the first production knives to be manufactured from Duratech 20CV, a powder metallurgy stainless tool steel. It contains a large volume of extremely hard vanadium carbides, which increase wear-resistance. How tough? Try 35% greater than S30V, a super steel in its own right (e-mail us for a complete test report).
