Mini X-Ray Vision Saves the Day

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

Received this nice story from a SOG user recently. It speaks to the benefits of having a quick access blade on you at all times.

I just wanted to let you know that I am a very proud owner of several of your knives. I also want you to know how one of your products came in handy in preventing some serious bodily injury for a parade participant during my vacation last week. While attending a Fourth of July parade in northern lower Michigan, I happened to be carrying my SOG Mini X-ray Vision. My family and I were viewing from near the staging/starting area. The parade is quite a quirky and fun exhibit of silliness, so there was a lot of unchoreographed behavior by the entrants. One of the entries was a group of clownishly dressed people following a minivan which had loudspeakers mounted to the roof and cans trailing behind attached with what turned out to be very sturdy nylon cord. As the group was awaiting their turn to step off, some of the clowns were walking around acting goofy and one became entangled in the cord. He didn’t realize that the cans had wrapped around his ankle and flipped back over the cord. He was standing there shaking his foot as the minivan driver began moving forward. Due to the loudspeakers and other noise, the driver was unable to hear the shouts of those witnessing it telling him to stop. I quickly covered the fifteen or so feet as I withdrew my knife, opened it, grabbed the cord, placed the serrations against it and severed it in one quick slice - just as the entangled clown was being pulled off of his feet. The van stopped just as the cord was cut. The crowd applauded as I quickly made my way back to my family and the parade went on. Although the crowd was applauding the avoidance of catastrophy, I was applauding the fine tool I had just reinserted into my pocket.

Thanks for making such fine products.

SOG in Shooter

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to provide some knives for the production of the movie Shooter, starring Mark Wahlberg. The movies has been out for a while and I think it is on DVD now. They did end up using knives in the movie and they showed up on screen. Here is a picture of him with the SOG Daggert 2.

So I guess I have let the most recent teaser post sit long enough and let suspense build. I read though all the guesses and most people were close to being correct.
SOG Knife

Mr Skillz was the first person with the closest answer:

Well, the handle is definitely the same as the X-ray Vision’s.I’m guessing its a new blade shape, possibly a drop point or spear point, but built on the foundation of the X-ray Vision. It could just be a new tweaked design of the X-ray Vision, with a higher grind, shortened swedge grind, and a plain edge ti-ni coated blade.

And for his extremely close guess he gets a prize.  I’ll be sending a micron to him this week.

The actual answer is below (more…)

Kikuo Matsuda Knife Information

Monday, July 9th, 2007

Mr. Matsuda is one of the foremost hand grinders in the world and resides in Gifu, Japan. Always pushing the envelope, he has conjured up some of the most unusual grinds that incorporate hollow, flat, and convex shapes……all in one knife. Spencer and Kikuo collaborated to produce an interpretation of both of their design styles. Kikuo was asked to interpret SOGs design philosophy. SOG was challenged to utilize Kikuo’s skill in a novel way. We think the marriage of ideas has produced something truly unique.

We have coined the name ‘reverse collaboration’. This is where a manufacturer works closely with a custom maker to create a collaboration of ideas. The custom maker actually makes the knife for the manufacturer. In our case the knife is limited to 50 pcs. By using the manufactuers brand and tapping into its distribution, the custom maker reaches a larger audience. This allows him greater sales and name recognition. For the manufacturer, the relationship also can expand the visibility of its core products by generating interest and publicity (and maybe winning a Blade magazine award). There is also an advantage in developing new technology or ideas in working with the custom maker. Lastly, if successful, the knife can evolve to the standard collaboration, where the manufacturer produces the combined design in volume and at a significantly lower price.
